A Degree from University or College: Dilemma

A Degree from University or College: Dilemma

A Degree from University or College: Dilemma
Although Nalanda and Takshashila (now in Pakistan) were established in the 5th- 6th AD, the term University first appeared in Europe during 1100-1300 AD and is older than the word College which did not appear for another 50 to 150 years.

During British India in early 19th century under utilitarian like Lord William Bentinck and Thomas Macaulay, the medium of education from Indian language changed to English. Literacy in India grew very slowly, we had 16 Universities, more than 244 Colleges and 73 Professional Colleges until independence in 1947. An acceleration in the rate of literacy growth started from 1991 onward and as per India Survey on Higher Education 2019, there are 993 Universities, 39931 Colleges and 10725 Stand Alone institutions are there in India.

Industrial Revolution took place in Britain during 18th century, while Britishers fuelled their Industrial Revolution by looting Indian resources and labour kept Scientific Studies far away from Indian Educational system except introduction of Architecture and medicine only in the beginning of 20th century but for own usage

Indian Higher Studies system still following the British structure where UG Program consisted for 3 years and student could select their choice of Professional Program just after Higher Secondary passed out in the field of Science, Commerce and Arts. A student selecting any professional program after their 10+2, they need to go through various level and many exams to reach final level of Professional Programs. Although, this various level of Professional Program covers most of UG Academic subjects only but it leads to more time, energy consuming and in current job market scenario more riskier for the students of humble background. While in USA eligibility criteria for most of the Professional Program is completion of UG Program which is consisted of 4 years.

Now in the age of Cloud computing, Data Science and Data mining, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, India of 1.3 billion population with avg. 74 % literacy rate when 40% our population will be staring at inevitable poverty in Post Covid 19 global pandemic Is Ramesh Pokhriyal right person, right time and at right place with right vision, right experience and wisdom to bring some reform ??? Debatable.

We all know that all Colleges are affiliated to State Universities, while State Universities run PGs Programs and Limited Research, College runs 3-year 6 semester UG Programs of Arts, Science and Commerce discipline and on completion Universities award the degrees to the students. While College teaches Academic 6 core papers in each semester, they lack resources to add any Vocational Courses forget Professional Program due to many reasons which I will not discuss Skill-Development program of current government here. So, specifically in case of UG Commerce students either need to go out of College to study the Professional Program and repeat UG subjects study again with extra hours or let it go if do not have time or money. Yes, few colleges are helping few students by arranging Professional Programs nowadays but it is too less. So, we are getting millions of Graduates with huge Skill-Gapswhich has been highlighted time and again at various platform and does not this situation create huge backlogs of Unemployment??? Debatable!

Now, Private Universities and Deemed to be Universities are those having liberty to structure their UG Program under UGC and NAAC guideline adding Vocational Courses apart from 6 Core Academic subject in each semester. Moreover, many Private Universities on spree of integrating many International Professional Certificates curriculum with UG and PG program specifically of Commerce discipline along with Business Analytics- it is helpful to bridge the skill-gaps but – Is it affordable to humble meritorious students and accessible to 2nd and 3rd tier students??? Debatable!
